The play was conceived for a professional cast, with scope to accommodate a much larger community cast.
The inclusion of the community cast in this production was a distinct project, funded by Big Lottery Fund, with additional funding from Southwark Council.
The 2010 production involved a core cast / crew of 18 theatre professionals, working with a community cast of 126 local children and adults. Other volunteers worked as costume makers, back-stage crew and stewards.
In the lead up to April 2010, a programme of guided walks, workshops, performances and other events enabled the recruitment and training of the community cast, and helped build a sense of excitement and anticipation.
Nearly 200 people benefitted directly from participating directly in the event as community cast or voluntary crew members. More than 1,000 more saw the performances in Southwark Cathedral and a further 800 the free public performances at the Scoop, More London.
The production received 'in kind' help from Southwark Mysteries Development Group, a loose association of local businesses and arts organisations, formed under the auspices of Better Bankside to fund-raise and offer business advice.
